Sanskrit (संस्कृतम् saṃskṛtam) is an Indian language which has a history of over three and a half thousand years. In it's earliest known form it is called Vedic Sanskrit while after around the fourth century B.C.E. it is called Classical Sanskrit. It serves as the language of Hinduism's religious texts and many other non-religious texts of ancient India. Today, the language is one of the 22 official languages of India. It is written predominately in the Devanāgarī script but also can be found in a number of others.
