Rotterdam
Rotterdam is a large Dutch harbour city and the dominant part within the municipality of Rotterdam. Rotterdam is a part of the Randstad and lies in South-Holland. The similarly-named municipality of Rotterdam is, with 617,347 inhabitants (1 january 2012), after Amsterdam, the largest municipality in the Netherlands. The harbour of Rotterdam is the largest and most important in Europe and is also one of the largest and most important in the world. The city lies on the New Maas, one of the rivers in the delta formed by the Rhine and the Maas. The name Rotterdam dates from the thirteenth century and refers to a dam in the river Rotte. The historic inner city was in May 1940 mostly destroyed by a German bombardment.
Rotterdam is een grote Nederlandse havenstad en dominerend onderdeel binnen de gemeente Rotterdam. Rotterdam maakt deel uit van de Randstad en is gelegen in Zuid-Holland. De gelijknamige gemeente Rotterdam is met 617.347 inwoners (1 januari 2012) na Amsterdam de grootste gemeente van Nederland. De haven van Rotterdam is de grootste en belangrijkste van Europa en behoort tevens tot de grootste en belangrijkste havens ter wereld. De stad is gelegen aan de Nieuwe Maas, een van de rivieren in de delta die gevormd wordt door de Rijn en de Maas. De naam Rotterdam stamt uit de dertiende eeuw en verwijst naar een dam in de rivier de Rotte. De historische binnenstad werd in mei 1940 grotendeels verwoest door een Duits bombardement.
