| Het Nederlands is een West-Germaanse taal en de moedertaal van de meeste inwoners van Nederland, België en Suriname, de drie lidstaten van de Nederlandse Taalunie. De Nederlandse Taalunie is een internationale instelling die onder meer de regels voor de Nederlandse standaardtaal vastlegt. In de Europese Unie spreken ongeveer 23 miljoen mensen Nederlands als eerste taal, en een bijkomende 5 miljoen als tweede taal. Verder is het Nederlands ook een officiële taal van de Caribische eilanden Aruba, Curaçao en Sint-Maarten, terwijl er nog historische minderheden bestaan in Frankrijk, Duitsland en in mindere mate Indonesië, en nog ruim een half miljoen sprekers in de Verenigde Staten, Canada en Australië. De Kaap-Hollandse dialecten van Zuid-Afrika en Namibië werden gestandaardiseerd tot Afrikaans, een wederzijds verstaanbare dochtertaal van het Nederlands. Het Nederlands is nauw verwant aan het Engels en Duits, en wordt tussen beide geplaatst. Het Nederlands kent een hoofdzakelijk Germaanse woordenschat, in grotere mate dan het Engels. | Dutch is a West-Germanic language and the mother tongue of most of the inhabitants of the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname, the three member states of the Dutch Language Union. The Dutch Language Union is an international institution which, among others, set the rules for Standard Dutch. In the European Union, approximately 23 million people speak Dutch as their first language, and an additional 5 million as a second language. As well, Dutch is also an official language of the Caribbean Islands of Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten, while an historical minority exist in France, Germany and to a lesser degree Indonesia, and up to about half a million speakers in the United States, Canada and Australia. The Cape Dutch dialect of South Africa and Namibia has become standardised to Afrikaans, a mutually understandable daughter language of Dutch.
