Het wordt in het westen en noorden begrensd door de Noordzee, langs de oostgrens door Duitsland en in het zuiden door België. De hoofdstad van Nederland is Amsterdam De regeringszetel is Den Haag. De Caribische eilanden Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba maken als bijzondere gemeenten deel uit van het land. Nederland heeft een inwonertal van bijna 17 miljoen en een oppervlakte van bijna 42.000 vierkante kilometer. Ruim 18% van het oppervlak bestaat uit water. Een groot deel van het land en de bevolking bevindt zich onder zeeniveau. Het land wordt beschermd tegen het water door middel van een systeem van dijken en waterwerken.
