Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a West-European country on the North Sea, bordered by the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. The land area is almost 31,000 square kilometers and has a population of more than 11 million inhabitants. The largest and most important city is Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. Brussels is the headquarters of the European Union.
België, of voluit het Koninkrijk België, is een West-Europese staat aan de Noordzee, grenzend aan Nederland, Duitsland, Luxemburg en Frankrijk. Het land is bijna 31,000 vierkante kilometer groot en heeft een bevolking van iets meer dan 11 miljoen inwoners. De grootste en belangrijkste stad is Brussel, de hoofdstad van België. Brussel is het bestuurlijk centrum van de Europese Unie.
The country has three official languages. Approximately sixty percent of the population speaks Dutch., mainly in Flanders. Forty percent speaks French, mainly in Wallonia. Less than one percent speaks German, in the East Cantons.
Het land heeft drie officiële talen. Ongeveer zestig procent van de bevolking spreekt Nederlands, vooral in Vlaanderen. Veertig procent spreekt Frans, vooral in Wallonië. Minder dan een procent spreekt Duits, in de Oostkantons.
Belgium arose after the Belgium Revolution in 1830 when it separated from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
